This is a charming soap bubble of a book - lighthearted and full of lovely scenes and characters. The rich Mrs. Burgoyne of the title is a young and beautiful widow with two little girls, who returns to a small town where she was happy when she was small. Since she has been married to a very wealthy man and has lived in quite wealthy circumstances all over the world, the people of the town aspire to imitate her in everything to show their sophistication. However, since she lives much more simply than most of them did before she arrived, their social striving to equal her has the unexpected result of encouraging simpler meals and dress. The true goodness of Mrs. Burgoyne also encourages them to pay attention to their neighbors in the poorer parts of the town. Of course there is a romance, and of course it resolves satisfactorily, but beyond that, there is a gentle social commentary on the ruthless attempt to keep up with society in the US of that time - a frequent Norris theme (Compare her book "The Undertow", for example.) Readers will enjoy the scenes of children at imaginative play, as well as a wonderful episode in a small town parade.Product details

This book was obviously written at a time when men and women had different roles, and the role of being a wife and mother was honored. It was written by a woman, and touches on the positive influence an honorable woman can have on those who know her. I enjoyed it, but I tend to be a bit old fashioned myself.
Sometimes I am looking for a read that is comforting and about people whom we hope might be real. This was such a book to me. Women who could be taught to care for children who needed care and love. Where money was not everything but where caring was. Thanks for such a book.
On of my favorites by this author. Maybe a bit of a fairy tale but interesting and a feel good book.
Interesting to see that even at the turn of the last century, mothers' level of involvement in their children's lives was an issue. I find the social comment and everyday details of Kathleen Norris' novels fascinating.
Sweet story about romance and being a mother...an excellent mother. And doing what you can to help those around you...."dabbling, Not institutions" That is to say, individuals helping individuals and not relying on institutions to solve our problems.
I've become a Kathleen Thompson Norris fan. The book is very well written, and is not hard for readers of today to "get into". The story is humorous, poignant, and heart warming. It tackles social questions from the early 1900's, and surprisingly is still relevant today. Her writing style somewhat reminds me of Rosamunde Pilcher's...great descriptions so that you can almost smell a flower, feel the breeze on your face, etc.
"The Rich Mrs. Burgoyne" is about a young widow who returns to a small California town in order to raise her children in simplicity. Her ideas seem fairly radical to the reigning elite of the town, and this leads to some interesting developments as everyone knows that Mrs. Burgoyne has millions of dollars so must be respected. She also reestablishes her friendship with the local town "boy most likely to succeed", who didn't live up to the town's expectations.
Although this book isn't advocating women's lib, it really seems to be an early "girl power" kind of story. I'm going to re-read it soon.
This was an unusual story about a small town in California that sees its way of life dramatically changed when the "rich Mrs. Burgoyne" moves into the old mansion on the hill. The story explores how our assumptions about people can color our perceptions of their actions Mrs. Burgoyne turns out not to be the person everyone thought she was, but by the time the town finds it out, she's already transformed their way of thinking. That she really was never trying to do it in the first place, and wouldn't have been able to do it if the town had known the truth about her, is what makes the story intriguing. The book is also a treatise of sorts that lays out the author's view of a woman's role in society. She believes women should be a force for good, who raise their own children rather than farming the task out to nursemaids, and who work to make lives better in the community rather than spending all their time and money following the latest fashions. It's an interesting point of view, and I got a chuckle out of the author's condemnation of one of the characters, "who was one of the great army of women who help to send the sale of an immoral book well up into the hundreds of thousands." Just imagine if the author who wrote those words in 1912 could see what books women are turning into bestsellers now. She would be fifty shades of horrified. Overall, this wasn't a wonderful book, but it was engaging and thought-provoking.
