The Reunion An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a jawdropping twist eBook Samantha Hayes
Does this author have 74 family members that wrote reviews? The book is not a thriller, psychological or otherwise. If I wanted to hear ad nauseam about family problems, I'd just talk to my own family. It's well written, just boring me to death, I'm about 1/3 of the way through and not sure I want to finish it.Tags : Amazon.com: The Reunion: An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist eBook: Samantha Hayes: Kindle Store, ebook,Samantha Hayes,The Reunion: An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist,Bookouture,Fiction Psychological,Fiction Thrillers Suspense
The Reunion An utterly gripping psychological thriller with a jawdropping twist eBook Samantha Hayes Reviews
From my blog
I haven't read a book by Samantha Hayes in a few years and I wanted my next read to be from a favourite author, it didn't disappoint. I enjoy the authors style, the complexity of a suspense, mystery but in a simplistic way, no manipulating just good writing but the reader doesn't want to miss the little clues she gives you.
Claire is the glue of the family, loyal and honest to family and friends. She lives with her husband and kids next to her childhood family farm house where her mom and dad still live. Her mom would like to sell, she feels it is time, to large for them now and her dad has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimers and doesn't want to sell. Claire comes up with the idea to have a reunion including siblings and best friends. She thought it would help to bring good memories back for her dad before it was to late and to help make the decision about selling. The mystery of the loss of her sister still is a black cloud over the family and everyone hasn't been together since that tragic day.
Everyone starts to arrive for the anticipated reunion, fun times going down memory lane. An addition comes along, Claire's best friends daughter, Rain. Well she was a character that pulled at your emotional strings, anger, sadness, dismissive, empathy and sympathy but overall she is in teenager hell mode and it was hard to like and believe her. And then history repeats itself and Rain has gone missing also.
This was a great book on family dynamics and friendships. Who do you believe, what secrets does each person have and how does this affect the tragedies? I did figure out who was responsible but I still consider it jaw dropping and how it all came together was executed to perfection. I even knew who would put it all together but the appalling part of the story that occurred to both victims, was shocking to me. A really great read, you will not figure it all out and will enjoy the complexity of the story and what all the characters bring to the story.
My favourite by Sam Hayes is Tell Tale.
This was a good book and mystery. I really enjoyed the family relationships and the friendships. A very good twist or two in this involving story. It is well written and told in two voices, the main story in third person and a parallel story told in first person, well done.
I'm 100% obsessed with this book!!!! It was so so so good!!!!! I read it in 24 hours. Truly couldn't put it down. I read A LOT - at least two books per week - it's incredibly rare to find a book that lingers in your head for days after - this book did that for me. I want to read it all over again! It was so well written and it was so captivating - the character development, the settings, everything. The way the author was able to create so many different characters and make them feel completely real - just amazing. And it wasn't confusing! When there are multiple characters with detailed personality traits/issues, the story can get lost or confusing. This was not one of those books. And the story plot - so different and original. It was incredibly twisted, but not to the point where it was overkill. It was just twisted enough to throw you off balance and really make you think. Some authors go for the nasty, shock value to create a "real thriller"...this book didn't need that. You don't need gore to have a true psychological thriller. This was a very smart, creative thriller that makes you question everything and everyone. Truly a fantastic book - can't wait to read all of her books!!!!
Although a little slow-moving at the start, once the story gripped me it would not let go. Friendships and betrayal, twists and turns. I read compulsively ... and this would have been 5 stars, but the final denouement was not believable. It went too far out of character, and one could ask Ms Hayes a lot of questions about it. I'm still also not clear what exactly happened between Callum and Rain .... Who's telling the truth about the incident, and who's lying? This accomplished writer should perhaps not have decided on that strange explanation at the end ... (No more, or it's a spoiler).
It's definitely a unique book. So many characters could be the guilty one. But that's part of the problem at least in the first half of the book - too many characters. The first half moved so slow that I gave it up about 4 times. When I tried to find another book that sounded interesting, I just couldn't find one so I'd have to force myself to go back to this one. After the first half, it finally got its hooks in me. I was pretty sure I knew who the "bad guy" was so that didn't surprise me when I found out. There were some other good surprises with different characters though.
First book I have read by this author. It was, as promised, utterly gripping. Many twists and turns. But one aspect of the ending did not make sense to me. Oh how I wish I could find a website where people discuss books AFTER reading them and thus are not prevented from using “spoilers”. But I can’t. Maybe could start one?
I have lost count of the number of books I have read this year which admittedly were offers but were a waste of money. We buy them because we see good reviews, five stars and then wonder if we are reading the same book. This is most definitely in that category. Poor characters, unlikable, boring story and very poor ending. I should add that hal way through I skipped to the end and wondered why I bothered.
