Her Mother Grave Absolutely gripping crime fiction with unputdownable mystery and suspense Detective Josie Quinn Book 3 eBook Lisa Regan Reviews
what happens when the person responsible for solving the mysteries, is the mystery? The one person Police Chief Josie Quinn would rather never see again, has to be found...by her. An interesting twist, with enough side events to keep everyone hopping, the book is an enjoyable read. I had not read the first two books, so feel like I could have missed some back references, but enjoyed the story never less.
My girlfriends forced me into creating a mini book club with them. Reluctantly I joined and I randomly picked book one of what I didn’t realize was a series. The book club started August 28. I haven’t read anything for leisure in years and years. Quite frankly, up until now I hadn’t found anything modern that was able to keep my interest. I just finished book 3 of this series and I am so sad that book 4 doesn’t come out until November 28. I haven’t been this enthusiastic about reading since my days reading the Harry Potter series. The plot moves quickly, the characters are incredibly likable and endearing, the villains are detestable, there are twists and spins that keep you guessing. And even with all that, Regan leaves you wanting to learn more and more about what is coming next! Needless to say, I quickly discovered that I really enjoy Lisa Regan’s books. I feel like an obsessed teenager waiting for the next book to come out! Haha! I guess I’ll have to read some of her other works until book 4!!!
I bought book three of a three book series, but I didn't have a problem with the story line. Ms. Regan is a good writer, but she put in some outrageous situations for the heroine, Josie, who is the police chief. In one instance, a society dame wrestles Josie's gun from her, then a woman described as old, overweight, and soft beats Josie in hand-to-hand combat, and finally Josie gets thrown in a hole by the old woman. Really??? It really spoiled the book for me. And no one noticed that the two women really looked alike?
Oh, wow! Now we find out why Josie is not exactly likable and her emotions are all over the place crazy! Don’t worry, I think this story stands alone okay, as the author will give you some backstory. However, read Books 1 and 2 first if you really want to understand this complicated character. In Book 3, “Her Mother’s Grave”, Author Lisa Regan, uses different chapters to tell the reader the story of Josie’s life from 6 yeas old, through different ages as a child, always coming back to present time, 30 years old. The chapters are carefully marked; it is well-done, and not confusing. It does increase the tension and suspense, though, which just makes the reader want to keep reading till the end!
When a body is found and identified as Belinda Rose, the same name as Josie’s mother, this starts a roller-coaster-ride of uncertainty and excitement that just keeps coming. Sometimes when life is tough, the person either breaks or just gets tougher. Josie does not give up; like ripples in a pond, one murder leads to one mysterious event after another. Josie is now the Police Chief of medium size town of Denton, PA., and her team is the same as in the past books. Wonderfully skilled Detective Gretchen Palmer and Lieutenant Noah (mmm) Fraley help Josie solve the crimes. This is a great police procedural with lots of surprises and twists. A very entertaining read!
As the third book in a series, you expect to know the author by now, but you would be wrong. Almost every page left me sitting in a roller coaster in the front seat, slightly suspended over the top of a giant hill. My stomach nearly in my feet in anticipation. Ready for the weightless drop that is sure to come. Knowing you are going down a hill, but not knowing how fast you will hit the next turn or twist upside down.
This is the type of gripping writing that Ms Regan continues to deliver in every book. She is one of the few authors that still keeps me reading nonstop until the book is over. Then you wish for another 100 pages.
This book unlocks the details of the past of Josie Quinn. The hints in the first two books can’t possibly prepare you for the intensity of her story. Add in the mystery of newly uncovered bones near the area she grew up in with some old friends and new characters you will fly through this book! I’m a hug fan of Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner, Alex Kava and more but I have to add Lisa Regan as right up there in my top 5.
I couldn't imagine a more convaluted place to live than in Denton, Pennsylvania. It reminds me of the old, old movie, "The Hills Have Eyes". Yuck.
Too many coincidences. They don't all feel contrived, though, which is why I felt comfortable with a 3.5 rating. Ms. Regan's writing is good. I think she relies too much on old serial movies/TV shows from the 60s, though. Lots of her chapters end on mini cliffhangers. I also think that she makes things almost ridiculously complicated. The family tree from this town must be fascinating.
I am not overly taken with Josie, still. I like that she was willing to open up more with Noah and Gretchen than in her previous books, but it's almost like she's too far removed when following leads about her own life. Her emotions are almost robotic, as if we're being told how she felt after the fact. Not enough showing.
It makes her less of an enigma and more of an incomplete human. I'm still going to read more books about her and her friends, but I hope they're going to be less predictable.
